Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose what college or program I wish to support?
It is important to remember - this is your contribution. As the
donor, you have the opportunity to earmark your support to literally
any campus, college, or program within the university. Approximately
90% of the gifts received each year are earmarked by donors to support
programs of personal interest. No administrative costs are taken
from these gifts, meaning that 100 cents of every dollar you contribute
go to support the program you designate.
Unrestricted gifts also benefit students and faculty. These unrestricted
dollars are primarily used to fund the UT National Alumni Association
scholarship program. With over 600 scholarships awarded this hear,
the UTNAA program is the university's largest scholarship fund based
upon number of annual awards. Recipients may attend the campus or
college of their choice and can pursue any area of study.
Are gifts to the university tax deductible?
In most all cases, gifts to the University of
Tennessee are tax deductible under the guidelines set forth by the
Internal Revenue Service.
It is, however, strongly recommended that you consult your tax advisor regarding
the exact deductibility of gifts to the university.
How do I make a gift of stock?
Many donors find that gifts of appreciated securities are an ideal
way to make their gift. You have several options when making a gift
of stock. If the certificate is in your possession, you may mail
or deliver it to the university. If the shares are held in an account
with your broker, these can be transferred to a university account.
For specific information on contributing securities to the university,
please call the University Alumni and Development Office at
(865) 974-2115 or contact your campus development office.
Will my company match my gift to the university?
It's quite possible. Many companies maintain a matching gifts program
whereby employee gifts to UT are "matched." If your employer
offers such a program, you can multiply the power of your gift by
sending your firm's completed matching gift form along with your
contribution.
To find out if your employer offers a matching gift program, you
should contact the company's human resources or payroll office.
If you have additional questions about matching gifts, please contact
the Development Office at (865) 974-2115.
How do I know if the university has received my gift?
Once a gift has been received and deposited, a formal receipt will
be mailed to you. This is usually done within three (3) working
days, and will detail the amount, date received, and designation
of your gift.
